Definition
1h-indole-3-acetonitrile, also known as 3-(cyanomethyl)indole or ian, is a member of the class of compounds known as 3-alkylindoles. 3-alkylindoles are compounds containing an indole moiety that carries an alkyl chain at the 3-position. 1h-indole-3-acetonitrile is practically insoluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). 1h-indole-3-acetonitrile can be synthesized from acetonitrile. 1h-indole-3-acetonitrile is also a parent compound for other transformation products, including but not limited to, Cys(IAN)-Gly, gammaGluCys(IAN), and L-Cys(IAN). 1h-indole-3-acetonitrile can be found in a number of food items such as peach, red huckleberry, cumin, and dill, which makes 1h-indole-3-acetonitrile a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products.
Belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 3-alkylindoles. 3-Alkylindoles are compounds containing an indole moiety that carries an alkyl chain at the 3-position.
