Definition
L-histidinol, also known as 4-[(S)-2-amino-3-hydroxypropyl]imidazole or (S)-beta-amino-1h-imidazole-4-propanol, is a member of the class of compounds known as aralkylamines. Aralkylamines are alkylamines in which the alkyl group is substituted at one carbon atom by an aromatic hydrocarbyl group. L-histidinol is soluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). L-histidinol can be found in a number of food items such as komatsuna, corn salad, watermelon, and purple mangosteen, which makes L-histidinol a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. L-histidinol can be found primarily in prostate Tissue, as well as in human fibroblasts and prostate tissues. L-histidinol exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. Moreover, L-histidinol is found to be associated with prostate cancer.
Belongs to the class of organic compounds known as aralkylamines. These are alkylamines in which the alkyl group is substituted at one carbon atom by an aromatic hydrocarbyl group.
