Definition
Biochanin a, also known as 4'-methylgenistein or 5,7-dihydroxy-3-P-methoxyphenyl-4h-chromen-4-one, is a member of the class of compounds known as 4'-o-methylisoflavones. 4'-o-methylisoflavones are isoflavones with methoxy groups attached to the C4' atom of the isoflavone backbone. Thus, biochanin a is considered to be a flavonoid lipid molecule. Biochanin a is practically insoluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). Biochanin a can be found in a number of food items such as american pokeweed, oval-leaf huckleberry, acorn, and almond, which makes biochanin a a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Biochanin a can be found primarily in blood and urine. Biochanin a is a non-carcinogenic (not listed by IARC) potentially toxic compound.
Belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 4'-o-methylisoflavones. These are isoflavones with methoxy groups attached to the C4' atom of the isoflavone backbone.
