Hydroquinone, also known as quinol or 1,4-benzenediol, is a member of the class of compounds known as hydroquinones. Hydroquinones are compounds containing a hydroquinone moiety, which consists of a benzene ring with a hydroxyl groups at positions 1 and 4. Hydroquinone is soluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). Hydroquinone can be found in a number of food items such as peppermint, pigeon pea, chia, and shiitake, which makes hydroquinone a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Hydroquinone can be found primarily in blood and urine, as well as throughout most human tissues. Hydroquinone exists in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, hydroquinone is involved in few metabolic pathways, which include d-glyceric acidura, glycerol phosphate shuttle, glycerolipid metabolism, and riboflavin metabolism. Hydroquinone is also involved in a couple of metabolic disorders, which include familial lipoprotein lipase deficiency and glycerol kinase deficiency. Hydroquinone is formally rated as an unfounded non-carcinogenic (IARC 3) potentially toxic compound. Hydroquinone, also benzene-1,4-diol or quinol, is an aromatic organic compound that is a type of phenol, a derivative of benzene, having the chemical formula C6H4(OH)2. It has two hydroxyl groups bonded to a benzene ring in a para position. It is a white granular solid. Substituted derivatives of this parent compound are also referred to as hydroquinones. The name "hydroquinone" was coined by Friedrich Wöhler in 1843 . Hydroquinone reduces melanin pigment production through inhibition of the tyrosinase enzyme, which is involved in the initial step of the melanin pigment biosynthesis pathway.
