Nicotinamide riboside, also known as N-ribosylnicotinamide or 1-(beta-D-ribofuranosyl)nicotinamide, is a member of the class of compounds known as glycosylamines. Glycosylamines are compounds consisting of an amine with a beta-N-glycosidic bond to a carbohydrate, thus forming a cyclic hemiaminal ether bond (alpha-amino ether). Nicotinamide riboside is slightly soluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). Nicotinamide riboside can be found in a number of food items such as root vegetables, chervil, malus (crab apple), and butternut squash, which makes nicotinamide riboside a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Nicotinamide riboside can be found primarily in urine. Nicotinamide riboside exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, nicotinamide riboside is involved in the nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a pyridine-nucleoside form of vitamin B3 that functions as a precursor to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide or NAD+ .
